What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?
I carry the Word of God in my heart. It helps me to forgive daily. I forgive my baby granddaughter’s murderers, likely the hardest thing I have ever had to do, because I know that real justice can only come from God, whose vengeance, according to His Word, is swift and mighty and belongs to Him alone. That word “vengeance” has no place in a joyful heart. God carries my pain and anger. He asked me to let Him carry my burdens, not let Him carry them, then take them back to myself again.
Carrying the Word also means I can’t unknow what I know and act like a jerk. It calls me to be like Jesus in ALL THINGS. It’s my privilege to choose right. When everyone around me is doing wrong, making fun of someone, passing by a homeless man in the heat, or cutting a line at the DMV, it’s my privilege to offer a kind word, a granola bar and bottle of water, or to stay put in line and wait my turn. Joy from choosing right, doing the will of God, is a real thing. Carrying the Word in my heart protects me like thick hedges and high walls. It guides my choices always. It works as a sword to cut through trash and find truth.
