What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?
My mother told us stories of Pokagon Potawatomi and insisted we were of the tribe with wisdom, love, respect, truth, honesty, humility, and bravery. Mother was a different kind of person. I stopped listening to her wild craziness when I was a teenager and realized too late that some of it was important.
I went to say goodbye long after I learned she had Parkinson’s disease. When my sisters called for a final visit, I chose not to go, which I will forever regret. Now, I have a thousand questions. I hope one day to go to Dogowaic to find answers, to find my people.
I might never know my heritage truly, but I know who I am. I am happy with the life I have chosen to live with Jesus of wisdom, love, truth, respect, honesty, humility, and bravery.
