See What You Said

What skill would you like to learn?

I am going deaf very quickly because I have an autoimmune disease, so my hearing aids will not always help me. I might get a cochlear implant someday. For now, I need to learn sign language.

As a teacher, I went to several American Sign Language classes when they were offered. The trick to keeping the signs in my long-term memory would have been to have someone with whom to practice during the class. My husband wore hearing aids for years but refused to help me. I am making it my goal for October to find a class to attend in person because I need to be around people, and to find a partner to practice with online because I need consistency to learn.

I don’t want to have to keep repeating, “Sorry, I didn’t see what you said. Could you repeat that?” It’s tiring filling in conversation gaps from people facing away from me or turned to the side. I want to understand it all the first time, especially the good stuff.
