What is one thing you would change about yourself?
I learned to be of service when I was very young. I’m the oldest child from an all-daughter Christian military household. Some time in my raising, I figured out serving was just expected. Serving fit with mom’s unwritten go-along to get-along or get the strap rule. So, I grew up a nice lady, very nice, too nice.
In learning, a person can hear, and know in her head that a thing is right, but never believe in her heart that it is real for her, that she can have it. I didn’t learn early to see myself as a strong person. I didn’t look in the mirror and see a she who stands freely on two feet with owned thoughts and ideas. I always checked big decisions with someone before I went ahead. I would now change that in myself to take away times of feeling hurt and inadequate.
Now I know, if I can’t see it, I can’t be it. If I can imagine myself as a boss, I can be a boss. I do not have to serve unless I choose to do it. Walmart isn’t the only place for choice. The opportunity to use my Secret Power of No is all around me. I am still a nice lady. This nice lady now has a backbone, boundaries, and a Secret Power. I should use my “No” power more often.
