One Against the World

What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

I like to cheer for the athlete who competes against himself/herself in boxing, swimming, gymnastics, rodeo, track and field events, and snowboarding. Yes, there are other athletes to beat. However, when someone works hard to record his or her personal best, that smile of confidence and inner joy is really what’s worth catching.

We all want to be better than ourselves, to be inspired to be the best at something. Athletes who put in the work to be great, who are real people, become our champions, our heroes. They have inspired me to laugh with myself, to learn self defense, to learn to swim, to do yoga for relaxation and stress relief, to learn to ride a horse without fear, to learn to skip and to walk distances for my health, and to sled in the snow on a cardboard refrigerator box wrapped in a trash bag.

Most importantly, I learned from athletes boundaries and goals. I know I will never bungee jump or jump from a plane, and I will listen to my body when it’s trying to tell me that it is time to quit.
