
Gluten free Recipe
Original red hots were a small, round, cinnamon candy my sisters and I bought from the corner candy store growing up. This recipe reminds me of those.
If you are not avoiding carbs., these can be made sweeter with brown sugar. If you are not vegetarian, these can be made more savory baked or served with turkey sausage. This recipe works with most apple varieties.
What you need:
Apple peeler
Sharp knife
Cutting board
Frying pan
Large and small mixing bowls
Large baking dish
Reynolds wrap-tin foil
Ingredients:
6-8 apples peeled, cored, and sliced, placed in large bowl
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons olive oil
1/2 cup crushed pecans
2 cloves minced garlic
1 peeled and minced onion
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Place olive oil in pan over medium to low heat. Roast and stir garlic and onion about five minutes, until soft. Turn off burner.
Mix all spices and nuts in small bowl.
Pour onion blend into sliced apples. Stir.
Pour apple onion and garlic blend into baking dish.
Top with nuts and spices.
Cover dish with Reynolds wrap.
Bake 45 minutes.
I have baked this with added cranberries, yum. I also tried peaches and pears as the main fruits. I like it with peaches. I did not like pears. They seemed too sweet, and not enough of their flavor broke through the spices.
